One million South African workers to strike today

School principals will be among those involved in the strike despite "intimidation" attempts by the education department officials, EI affiliate the SA Democratic Teachers Union (SADTU) said. SADTU received reports suggesting that principals were instructed to inform immediate supervisors if they intended to strike and to provide names of staff who embarked on strike, said deputy general secretary Don Pasquallie. "SADTU rejects the education department's attempts to intimidate school principals and to divide them from their fellow educators," said SADTU general secretary and EI president Thulas Nxesi. "We call on principals to take a full role in the industrial action to come," Nxesi said.
