AYEN Webinar Strengthens Young Educators' Role in CESA Implementation

On July 9, 2025, the African Young Educators Network (AYEN) hosted an impactful leadership training webinar aimed at enhancing the role of young educators in implementing the Continental Education Strategy for Africa (CESA) 2026-2035. Conducted via the Zoom platform, the event attracted young educators from various Education International (EI) member organizations across Africa, creating a vibrant space for learning and collaboration.

The webinar opened with remarks from Dr. Dennis Sinyolo, Regional Director of Education International Africa. He emphasized the importance of quality public education as a fundamental human right and outlined the pressing challenges facing the education sector. Dr. Sinyolo noted that despite global commitments, an alarming 272 million children remain out of school, with 118 million of those in Africa alone. This stark reality underlined the urgency for action from educators and unions alike.

Throughout the session, participants engaged in meaningful discussions about the global education architecture and the significance of Sustainable Development Goal 4 (SDG4). This goal aims to ensure inclusive and equitable quality education for all, a mission that resonated deeply with the attendees. The webinar provided a vital platform for young educators to develop their advocacy skills, empowering them to take on leadership roles in their unions and communities.

Key highlights of the event included presentations on the objectives of CESA 2026-2035 and the ongoing "Go Public! Fund Education" campaign. These discussions illustrated the strategic framework that guides educational reforms across the continent. Participants explored how these initiatives can be leveraged to advocate for more resources and support for quality public education.

A significant outcome of the training was the collaborative development of implementation strategies for CESA 26-35. Participants proposed concrete measures to enhance advocacy efforts within their unions, focusing on how to effectively pressure governments for the full implementation of the new strategy. This proactive approach demonstrated the commitment of young educators to not only understand policy frameworks but also to engage in their execution.

Additionally, the session introduced a toolkit designed to aid member organizations in their advocacy campaigns. This resource aims to equip educators with the necessary tools and strategies to advocate effectively for educational equity and quality. By fostering a deeper understanding of policy implications and advocacy tactics, the toolkit empowers young educators to become change agents within their unions.

As the event concluded, participants left with a renewed commitment to advocate for quality public education and support their unions in achieving the ambitious goals set for 2030. The webinar successfully reinforced the vital role of young educators in shaping the future of education in Africa, highlighting their potential to drive meaningful change. Through collaboration and empowerment, young educators are poised to lead the charge for a more equitable and inclusive educational landscape across the continent.
