EI Africa and FEATU take steps to strengthen collaboration
Education International Africa (EIA) and the Federation of East Africa Teachers Unions (FEATU) have taken considerable steps to strengthen their collaboration. FEATU is made up of EI member organisations in East Africa and is currently led by the Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT).
Dr Dennis Sinyolo, the EIA Regional Director, met with the leadership of FEATU in Arusha, Tanzania, on 26 March to share experiences and develop common strategies for defending and promoting educators' and students’ rights in East Africa.
FEATU has been striving to influence the education and labour-related policies of the East Africa Community (EAC), which is an intergovernmental organisation for countries in the subregion. This is in line with EI Africa’s strategy to influence Regional Economic Communities (RECs) in order to ensure the achievement of quality education for all in the region.
‘FEATU has carried out several activities, notably capacity building on social dialogue and quality education, with financial support from Danish teacher trade unions, said FEATU Secretary General Henry Collins Oyuu, who is also a member of the EI Africa Regional Committee. Oyuu went on to highlight the critical importance of resuming the training they provided on Early Childhood Education (ECE) and decent employment. “These programmes strengthen the capacity of union leaders and members to engage in effective dialogue with governments”, he concluded.
FEATU has also undertaken a study on the effectiveness of the competence-based curriculum, which has been a topical issue in the subregion, particularly in Kenya.
During the meeting, Dr Dennis Sinyolo emphasised the critical importance of putting pressure on EAC governments to accelerate progress towards the achievement of SDG 4 and to fully implement the new Continental Education Strategy for Africa (CESA) 2026-2035 and the Recommendations of the UN High-Level Panel on the Teaching Profession.
Dr Sinyolo thanked the FEATU leadership for their commitment to advancing quality education, as well the professional status and working conditions of teachers in East Africa.
He went on to reiterate the need for closer collaboration between EI and FEATU, stressing, “Stronger collaboration, synergy and full alignment between EI and FEATU will give us greater impact, for we are stronger together”.
