Landmark Reforms Bolster Cape Verde's Teaching Profession
In a significant development for Cape Verde's education sector, the Sindicato dos Professores da Ilha de Santiago (SIPROFIS), the island's teachers' union, has expressed satisfaction with the newly approved Plan of Positions, Functions, and Remuneration (PCFR) for teaching staff.
The PCFR, which was approved by a specialized committee within the country's parliament, has been hailed as a historic achievement for the teaching profession in Cape Verde. According to Abraão Borges, the President of SIPROFIS, the changes to the PCFR represent a crucial step towards enhancing the status and working conditions of teachers.
"This approval is a significant milestone for the teaching profession in Cape Verde," Borges stated during a press conference in Praia, the capital city. "It is the result of intense negotiations between unions, the government, and parliament, and it reflects the commitment to improving the lives of our educators."
One of the key benefits of the new PCFR-Teaching Staff Statute is a 16% salary increase for all teachers. Furthermore, the new PCFR includes an additional allowance for teachers, which will now be included in their retirement benefits. This change is expected to provide greater financial security for educators in their later years.
While expressing satisfaction with the progress made, Borges urged unity among teachers and the broader Cape Verdean society to support the urgent approval and promulgation of the new PCFR. He emphasized the importance of addressing teachers' anxiety and ensuring the successful implementation of these reforms.
"We call for unity and urgency in approving and implementing the new teaching staff statute," Borges said. "These changes are crucial for enhancing the teaching profession and ensuring the continued development of our education system."
The approval of the PCFR-Teaching Staff Statute is seen as a positive step forward in Cape Verde's efforts to support its education sector and its dedicated teachers. As the nation continues to prioritize investment in its human capital, these reforms are expected to contribute to the overall progress and success of the country.
