Southern Africa Young Educators Undertake Exchange Visit To South Africa
Members of the Southern Africa Young Education Network (SAYEN) from the Swaziland National Association of Teachers (SNAT) in Eswatini and Organizaçao Nacional dos Professores (ONP) in Mozambique visited their counterparts from National Professional Teachers' Organisation of South Africa (NAPTOSA) and the South African Democratic Teachers Union (SADTU) in South Africa from 9th to 10th December 2024 to learn from each other, share experiences and good practices. Four (4) SAYEN members, each from the aforementioned education unions, participated in the exchange visit. The event was organized by Education International Africa (EIA) and led by Promoting of Education and Educators’ Rights (PEER) Project Officer, Mr. Boris Malinka Kombat.
The exchange visit is part of the yearlong planned activities of the PEER Project in Southern Africa in 2024, supported by OAJ and SASK of Finland. The young educators visited Sizanani Special School, Arcadia Primary School and union offices of SADTU and NAPTOSA, all in South Africa to observe and compare the tools available to educators in South Africa, the learning environment, how young educators are motivated, supported and incentivised and how they are involved in their union activities and leadership, with what prevails in their countries. The young educators were empowered through this exchange visit to come up with recommendations to their Ministers of Education in their countries to advocate for improvement of educational standards and better conditions of service for young educators.
The exchange of experiences among SAYEN members provided valuable lessons on school management, trade union work and the development of educational infrastructure. The visit to school and the education unions in South Africa demonstrated the importance of inclusive educational practices, strengthening education unions through effective communication and continuous training of teachers. The recommendations of the SAYEN members to their ministers of Education aim at contributing to the improvement of education and working conditions for teachers in Mozambique and Eswatini and improving the quality of teaching and learning while ensuring a more motivating and effective working environment in these countries.
