Ghana: TEWU takes action to stop the spread of Covid-19 among ESP
In order to curb the spread of the Covid-19 pandemic among Education Support Personnel (ESP), the Teachers and Educational Workers’ Union of the Trade Union Congress (TEWU-TUC) distributed Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) to its members across Ghana. This initiative was conducted with the support of Education International (EI) Africa.
The union shared about 10, 500 hand sanitizers and 125, 000 pieces of disposal face masks to its members, including those in deprived areas.
Speaking during the media launch, the General Secretary of TEWU, Mark Dankyira Korankye, stated that the Covid-19 pandemic has affected the social space, including education. He underlined that some union members in private schools lost their jobs while others got infected by the virus.
He highlighted that the official launch of the EI-TEWU Covid-19 initiative is a complementary strategy which will support the government to fight and mitigate the increasing number of outbreaks of the virus in schools, particularly in the wake of the Delta Variant.
“We at TEWU understand that our support to our members is not only confined to negotiations of salaries and conditions of service but the overall welfare of our members, including their safety and health,” he added.
Yussif Abubakari, Finance Officer of EI Africa, representing the office, stated that the office will continue to support the education sectors.
