EI Africa member organisations celebrate World Teachers' Day

Across Africa, Teacher Unions and educational organizations commemorated World Teachers’ Day under the theme "Valuing Teacher Voices." The day served as a powerful reminder of the essential role teachers play in shaping society and the importance of their involvement in educational policymaking. Various activities were held throughout the continent, culminating in a series of events aimed at amplifying the voices of educators.

In several countries, union leaders organized rallies and marches to advocate for better working conditions and remuneration for teachers. In places like  Burkina FasoCôte d’ivoire, Kenya (KNUT and KUPPET), Niger, Chad, Cameroon, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Mali, Gabon, and South Africa, educators gathered in large numbers, carrying banners that called for government accountability and increased funding for education. These demonstrations were not only a show of solidarity among teachers but also a strategic push for policy changes that prioritize educators’ needs and well-being.

Workshops and seminars were also held by teacher unions, focusing on the theme of the day. Educators participated in discussions about the challenges they faced, including inadequate resources and support. Leaders from various Teacher Unions emphasized the necessity of having teachers involved in designing, formulating, and implementing educational policies. This collaborative approach, they argued, is essential for creating a more relevant, effective and responsive education system.

In addition to rallies, marches and workshops, many unions took to social media to highlight the day's significance and share testimonials from teachers. Campaigns featured stories of teachers who have made a difference in their communities and advocated for their rights. This digital engagement helped raise awareness within Africa and on a global scale, showcasing the commitment of African educators to improving the educational landscape.

The day concluded with a call to action from Education International Africa, which highlighted the UN High-level recommendations emphasizing the importance of teachers in achieving quality education. Union leaders reiterated their commitment to advocating for teachers and urged governments to take concrete steps toward valuing their contributions. As the celebrations came to a close, the unified message was clear: to build a better future, teachers' voices must be heard and actively integrated into the educational policy landscape.
