EI Joins Virtual March against Child Labour

“The most effective way to eradicate child labour is to ensure access to equitable, inclusive, relevant quality education for all”.

Dr Dennis Sinyolo, Education International (EI) Africa Regional Director, stated while encouraging member organisations and all well-wishers to join the Africa Virtual March to push for concrete commitments from governments to eradicate child labor once and for all. The meeting of the fifth United Nations Global Conference on Child Labor this year at the invitation of the government of South Africa will be an important opportunity, he said.

He cautioned that putting children in school is not enough, and putting children in unsafe, overcrowded classrooms, in schools without toilets or water or health protocols, or enough trained teachers can result in school dropouts.

“What all children need is a quality education insured by three key pillars, namely: qualified teachers with decent salaries and working conditions; quality tools and ressources; and safe, healthy and supportive quality learning environments.”

He further urged individuals to join the Global March partners and education unions in mobilizing towards national action for getting all children back to school in Africa and globally, and towards achieving SDG goals on education for all and ending child labor.

“Join us in the fight against child labour for the promotion of the right to quality public education for all and the various activities put together by civil society organisations and education unions in your country to support the Africa Virtual Global March”, he concluded.
