EI Africa takes action to stop gender-based violence in schools
In order to expand the work of EI member unions on School Related Gender Based Violence, Education International (EI) Africa Region organised three online learning/planning workshops. The two days’ workshops, which were held online, were facilitated by a team of Gender@ Work resource persons for the English group (29th - 30th June), the French group (15th - 16th July), and the Portuguese group ( 27th - 28th July).
The SRGBV Learning/Planning Workshops aimed at providing training/learning on how to design and facilitate online workshops focused on SRGBV in the context of the Covid-19 pandemic. The activities, which involved twelve participants each, including sub-regional coordinators from RESAC, RESAO, WAWEN, SAWEN,WNEA and ten representatives of national women's networks from EI member organisations in Portuguese speaking countries.
The workshops were opened by Dr. Dennis Sinyolo, Regional Director of EI Africa. In his remarks, he said, “SRGBV remains one of the biggest barriers to the fulfilment of the right to quality education for all”.
According to the Regional Director, SRGVB is real and continues to affect and traumatise children and students, as well as young/female educators in many countries. He shared life stories of SRGBV that he experienced when he was a classroom teacher.
He added that addressing SRGBV requires a holistic approach involving the whole school and local community.
‘Education unions can and should continue to engage with their members, teachers, school leaders and education support personnel and to put pressure on their governments to take policy, legislative and concrete measures to end SRGBV. “We count on your leadership and that of your unions to tackle SRGBV head on and make our schools and all education institutions safe and welcoming to all”, he concluded.
The workshops gave an opportunity to the participants to share experiences of Gender-Based Violence in schools and stories in breakout rooms. They also discussed about the e-learning approaches, strategies, and actions to combat SRGBV in the era of Covid-19. Participants left the meeting motivated and inspired to initiate new actions to combat gender-based violence.
