Statement from Education International Africa on International Education Support Personnel Day
On this 16th of May, we gather to honour the invaluable contributions of education support personnel throughout Africa. This year, under the theme "Go Public! Invest in Education Support Personnel: Ensure Inclusive Education," we highlight these dedicated individuals' essential role in fostering equitable and inclusive learning environments for all students. Their commitment is crucial in ensuring that every learner has access to quality education regardless of background or ability.
Education support personnel are the backbone of our educational systems. They include counselors, cooks, drivers, librarians, special education aides, administrative staff, and many others who work tirelessly to support teachers and students alike. These professionals provide critical services that enable inclusive education, helping to identify and address the diverse needs of learners. Their work goes beyond administrative tasks; they build relationships, foster resilience, and create safe spaces where every student can thrive.
To achieve truly inclusive education, governments must prioritize investment in education support personnel. Adequate funding is essential to ensure that these professionals receive the training, resources, and support they need to excel in their roles. By investing in their professional development, we empower them to implement best practices that cater to the varying needs of students. This investment is not merely an expenditure; it is a commitment to nurturing an educational environment where all learners can succeed.
Furthermore, inclusive education financing must be a priority for governments and policymakers. We call on them to allocate sufficient resources to support education support personnel and to develop comprehensive funding strategies that address the needs of diverse student populations. This includes ensuring that schools are equipped with the necessary tools, training, and personnel to provide individualized support. By doing so, we can break down the barriers that prevent many students from accessing quality education.
As we celebrate Education Support Personnel (ESP) Day, let us reaffirm our commitment to inclusive education. Together, we can advocate for policies that recognize and elevate the role of education support personnel, ensuring they are valued and supported in their essential work. By investing in these dedicated professionals, we can create a brighter future for all learners, fostering an educational landscape where diversity is celebrated, and every child has the opportunity to thrive.
Happy International Education Support Personnel Day!
