Education International Africa’s Statement on GAWE 2025
As we mark Global Action Week for Education (GAWE) in 2025, Education International Africa reaffirms its commitment to advocating for quality education for all. This year's theme, "Education Saves Lives: Protect Education in Emergencies," resonates deeply with our vision of inclusive, equitable education that empowers every learner, especially in times of crisis.
Education is essential not only for academic growth but also for providing physical and psychosocial protection during emergencies. Quality education becomes a lifeline for vulnerable communities as we face ongoing challenges, such as conflicts, natural disasters, and health crises. It equips individuals with the resilience and skills necessary to navigate and overcome adversity.
Education International Africa calls upon the African Union, governments, and the United Nations to take immediate and decisive action to safeguard education in emergencies. We propose the following:
- Ensure Continuity of Education: We urge the African Union and national governments to implement policies that guarantee access to education during crises. This includes establishing emergency response plans that ensure educational institutions remain operational and accessible to all learners.
- Strengthen Support Systems: We call on the African Union and member states to enhance support systems for educators and students affected by emergencies. This includes providing mental health resources, training for teachers on trauma-informed practices, and ensuring that learning materials are available in crises.
- Promote Global Solidarity: We appeal to the United Nations to foster collaboration among member states and international organizations to share resources and best practices in protecting education during emergencies. This partnership should focus on innovative strategies that address the unique challenges faced by marginalized groups in crisis contexts.
As we commemorate GAWE 2025, let us unite in our efforts to advocate for policies that prioritize educational continuity, support teachers, and protect learners in emergencies. Together, we can build a future where every child has access to quality education, even in the most challenging circumstances.
"Education is a vital resource that saves lives and builds resilience. Together, we must ensure that every child in Africa has access to education, empowering them to thrive, even in emergencies." — Dr. Dennis Sinyolo, Director, Education International Africa.
Together, let us commit to protecting education and ensuring that every child in Africa is empowered to lead and flourish, regardless of the challenges they face.
