Empowering Educators in the Age of AI: Upholding Human Agency in Education

On this International Day of Education, we reflect on the theme "AI and Education: Preserving Human Agency in a World of Automation." As we navigate an increasingly automated world, the role of educators becomes more crucial than ever. AI has the potential to enhance learning experiences, but it must not overshadow the indispensable human touch that teachers bring to the classroom.

Education International Africa believes that preserving human agency in education is essential. Teachers are not just facilitators of knowledge; they are mentors, guides, and advocates for their students. Our ongoing campaign, "Go Public! Fund Education," emphasizes investing in public education systems that empower teachers and prioritize their professional development. This investment is vital for equipping educators with the skills to harness AI effectively while ensuring that the human element remains at the forefront of learning.

We call on governments, policymakers, and stakeholders to recognize the value of teachers and education support personnel in this digital age. By prioritizing funding for public education and supporting educators in adapting to new technologies, we can create an educational environment where AI serves as a tool for empowerment, not a replacement for human interaction. To protect students and educators, the African Union and its member states should ensure the regulation and  ethical use of AI.

As we celebrate this day, let us commit to a future where education is accessible, equitable, and human-centered, ensuring that all learners thrive in a world shaped by technology while preserving the vital role of teachers. Together, we can build a more sustainable and inclusive educational landscape that champions both innovation and humanity.
