EI Africa Launches Phase 3 Programme to Combat SRGBV
In a significant development in the fight against School-Related Gender-Based Violence (SRGBV), EI Africa Director Dr. Dennis Sinyolo announced the launch of the SRGBV Phase 3 Programme for 2024-2026. Under the theme “Educators Determined to End SRGBV (EDE-SRGBV),” this initiative aims to transform schools and education institutions into safe havens for all students. Dr. Sinyolo emphasized creating secure educational environments where learners can thrive free from fear and violence.
The SRGBV Phase 3 Programme was launched at a two-day SRGBV Seminar held in Accra, Ghana, where more than 30 educators, union leaders, and gender coordinators from 18 countries gathered to discuss strategies for addressing SRGBV in educational institutions. Participants actively engaged in dialogue and shared experiences, reinforcing their collective commitment to ending SRGBV. By pledging support for the Phase 3 Programme, they aim to implement effective measures that protect students and promote inclusivity in schools across the continent.
The EDE-SRGBV initiative signifies a renewed commitment to eradicating SRGBV and ensuring that every child has access to a safe learning environment. With this program, EI Africa seeks to mobilize educators and stakeholders to work collaboratively towards a future where schools are not only centers of learning but also safe and welcoming spaces for all.
Dr. Sinyolo referenced various international frameworks, including the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the African Union's Agenda 2063, which underscore education as a public good. He called for the ratification and implementation of ILO Convention 190 on Violence and Harassment in the World of Work, noting that only a fraction of African countries have adopted this essential convention designed to protect workers, including female educators from harassment. He urged participants to advocate for safer educational environments where students can thrive free from fear and violence.
As the Phase 3 Programme unfolds, EI Africa will focus on building partnerships with governments, civil society organizations, and international bodies to amplify the impact of their efforts. The commitment to this cause reflects a broader movement aimed at fostering educational environments where all individuals are protected and empowered, ultimately contributing to the overall well-being and development of communities across Africa.
With a collective determination to create welcoming and safe educational spaces, participants left the seminar inspired to continue their fight against SRGBV, fostering hope and resilience in schools and education institutions across Africa.
