Ethiopia: arrested teachers released on bail
ETA attributes this to the influence of the international community, particularly to EI and Amnesty International. Wasihun Melese, an elected officer of the ETA National Board, and Anteneh Getnet, a member of the ETA, had been detained incommunicado at the Addis Ababa Central Investigation Bureau (known as Maekelawi). At a court hearing on 25 September, they were remanded in custody for 14 days, following a request by the Ethiopian police for additional time to investigate their case. They were to appear to Court again on Monday 9 October. On 4 October, the police told the two teachers that they were entitled to go out free on bail if someone could take the responsibility of bringing them back to the police station for any investigation, at any time. The arrest of the two Ethiopian colleagues and their conditions of detention will be added to the complaint EI and the ETA filed with the ILO Committee on Freedom of Association on 11 September.
