The "Go Public! Fund Education" Campaign at the Heart of RESAC Meeting
A webinar was organised on 12 April 2024 by the coordination of the Réseau des Enseignantes Syndicalistes de l'Afrique Centrale (RESAC) to define strategies for the active participation of women teacher trade unionists in Central Africa in Education International's campaign, "Go Public! Fund Education". Fourteen (14) trade union organisations from Central Africa within the 8 countries of EI Africa's Zone 4 took part in the webinar.
Participants took stock of the state of education in Central African countries and shared the experiences of unions such as FECASE/Cameroon, FESER/Cameroon, SENA/Gabon, FENECO/DRC, SYECO/DRC, and SET/Chad. The overall conclusion following the exchange of experience was that education in the zone's countries is prey to increased privatisation, coupled with a quality below national and international standards.
The webinar highlighted the need for a campaign to denounce abuses in the education sector. It also highlighted the urgency to disseminate the 59 recommendations of the United Nations Secretary General's High-Level Panel on the Teaching Profession, which is a tool for unions to better articulate the issues affecting the teaching profession and to carry out effective advocacy.
The involvement and role of women in the Education International’s campaigns at the local, regional, and national levels were highlighted. RESAC members described how women can take ownership and leadership of the campaign. Strategies for disseminating the recommendations include explaining them to fellow teachers, and authorities at all levels, and using social networks and any other means of communication.
