GAWE 2024 Campaign: Transformative Education Takes Centre Stage
To promote transformative education and address the persistent barriers to quality education worldwide, the Global Action Week for Education 2024 (GAWE 2024) is set to take place from 22nd to 26th April 2024. This significant event marks the 25th anniversary of the Global Campaign for Education (GCE) and aims to remind governments and decision-makers of their global commitments to education. Education International is a founding member of GCE.
The campaign focuses on two key areas:
- the protection of the right to education in conflict-affected countries
- the transformation of education systems.
GAWE 2024 will call for the implementation of recommendations from the High-Level Panel on the Teaching Profession and emphasize the need to decolonize education financing to ensure equitable access to quality education.
GAWE 2024 will feature various coordinated campaign activities, including a global launch through a webinar on 22nd April 2024. GCE members, teachers, international non-governmental organizations, students, and youth will actively participate, lending their voices to the call for transformative education.
As we approach 2030, Education International remains steadfast in holding governments accountable for achieving equitable, inclusive, and quality education for all. GAWE 2024 serves as a rallying point for stakeholders worldwide to advocate for the transformative power of education and secure a better present and future.
Despite progress made since the Jomtien Education for All World Conference in 1990, challenges such as teacher shortages, gender inequity, discrimination, inadequate funding, and limited access to education persist. According to UNESCO, an estimated 250 million children worldwide are still out of school, while 773 million adults, predominantly women, lack basic literacy skills. These challenges have been further exacerbated by conflicts, economic crises, gender violence, racism, and climate disasters, necessitating an education that equips individuals to navigate these complex realities and shape a better future.
The COVID-19 pandemic has brought the importance of transformative education to the forefront. As schools shifted to online and distance learning, education systems worldwide have been compelled to rethink and revise curricula, integrate real-life learning experiences, and address issues such as mental health, gender equality, and inclusive technology.
Two years after the pandemic, the Transforming Education Summit (TES) organized by the United Nations highlighted the need for global efforts to transform education. Over 130 countries committed to rebooting their education systems and prioritizing action to tackle the learning crisis. GCE actively participated in the Summit's thematic action tracks, advocating for inclusive and equitable schools, learning for sustainable development, professional development for teachers, digital learning, and adequate financing for education.
Building on the momentum generated by the TES, GAWE 2024 aims to:
- Advocate for the inclusion of transformative education on the agenda of the Summit of the Future, to be held in September 2024.
- Amplify the perspectives of educators, children, youth, and adults on transformative education.
- Hold governments and decision-makers accountable for their commitments to transformative education and the TES.
During the 2024 GAWE campaign, EI Africa calls on African governments to invest in education, teachers, infrastructure, teaching and learning resources.
