EI AND SADTU SUPPORT SOUTH-SOUTH COOPERATION

Organizaçao Nacional dos Professores (ONP) top leaders convened at the Premiere Hotel in Nelspruit, South Africa, on the 6th and 7th July, 2023 in a retreat facilitated by SADTU and EI to help transform the ONP/SNPM into a strong, democratic, and independent teachers’ union capable of effectively defending and promoting the interests of her members and actively advocating for quality education for all.

The leaders were assisted in reviewing the development of ONP since 1981 when it was created and figured out the highs and lows of the organisation. In so doing they were able to point out the weaknesses, strengths and potential in the organisation, especially concerning mobilization, working relationships, constitutional obstacles, and the dire need for a better communication strategy.

The union leaders committed to  overcoming  their differences  increasing the membership and  raising its financial capacity for the ONP's sustainability through improved dues collection.

SADTU National Treasurer, Lindiwe Motshwane, while closing the workshop, hailed the ONP leaders for the very frank deliberations and expressed optimism that ONP would rise to the occasion to transform itself and sustain the longstanding cooperation with SADTU.

SADTU was contributing to the PEER (Promoting Education and Educators Rights) Project supported by OAJ (Teachers Union of Finland)  and SASK (Solidarity Centre of Finland). ONP along with SNAT are part of the Project which is coordinated by EI Africa with technical support from SADTU and NAPTOSA. The project supports the EI member organisations in union growth, social dialogue, and advocacy.
