International Day of Education: EI Africa calls on governments to invest in education and teachers

Today, Education International Africa joins the rest of the world in commemorating the International Day of Education. The Education Day is an important occasion for us to reflect on the progress made towards the achievement of equitable inclusive quality education for all.

African countries are far from meeting the United Nations’s Sustainable Development Goal 4 on Quality Education and the Objectives of the Continental Education Strategy for Africa. The situation has been further exacerbated by the ongoing COVID-19 crisis, conflict, climate change and other crises facing the continent.

“EI Africa would like remind African governments and key education stakeholders that education is a fundamental human right, a public good and public responsibility”, said EI Africa Director, Dr Dennis Sinyolo. Dr Sinyolo went on to urge African governments to invest in education and teachers. He also stressed the need for governments to conduct equity audits in order to ensure that no child is left behind during and beyond the COVID—19 crisis.

“We need to tackle child labour and all forms of disadvantage”, insisted Dr Sinyolo. “All children, including girls, those with disabilities and in child labour should have access to a quality education”, he concluded.

In 2018, the United Nations General Assembly proclaimed 24 January as International Day of Education(link is external), in celebration of the role of education for peace and development.
