EI affiliates in Zambia agree to merge

The three organisations that will come together are: the Zambia National Teachers' Union (ZNUT), the Basic Education Teachers' Union (BETUZ), and the Secondary Teachers' Union of Zambia (SESTUZ). The presidents and general secretaries of all three unions met in Livingstone, Zambia, on 12-13 March to discuss the merger. The meeting was also attended by representatives of the Utdanningsforbundet (UEN), the South African Democratic Teachers’ Union (SADTU), and EI’s Africa regional office. ZNUT president Henry Kapenda said the leaders of the three unions were mindful of the desire of the majority of members to have a united front and they have shown the commitment to achieve it. SESTUZ president Nyambe Sefulo said teachers could perform better when they work together. He noted that once united the three unions could avoid duplication of work and better manage their resources. BETUZ president Victor Mwanza said his union was committed to ensuring that the problems facing teachers are solved.
