AWEN online refresher course for gender coordinators

In the framework of the 2021 activities of the African Women in Education Network (AWEN), Education International (EI) Africa organised a two-day refresher course on the use of virtual platforms for the100 gender coordinators of member unions who were trained in November 2020. The training was conducted in four sessions of 25 participants each: one session for the English-speaking group (5-6 July 2021); one combined session for the English and Portuguese speaking group (8-9 July 2021) and two for French speaking  gender coordinators (21-22 July 2021) and  (29-30 July).

The objectives of the training were to (a) to increase and deepen knowledge of the most used online meetings and training virtual platforms, with a focus on the Zoom platform; (b) to enhance participants’ understanding of the different functionalities of Zoom and other platforms; (c) to update participants’ facilitation skills of online meetings and trainings; (d) to share strategies to enable sub-regional networks coordinators to maintain interaction with members despite the Covid-19 context.

The workshops were opened by Dr. Dennis Sinyolo, EI Africa Regional Director. In his remarks, he stated that digital skills can be as perfect as we apply them ‘It is like learning to ride a bicycle, you can be told how to ride it, you can observe when someone is riding it, but that will not make you a rider. You just need to jump on the bike and ride. You may fall at first but with time you will perfect your skill. Practice indeed makes perfect’, he emphasized.

He explained  that it is paramount for unions to use online platforms to recruit new members, to organise, mobilise and energise our fellow women and men colleagues to support our quest for gender equality.

The training also gave the opportunity to participants to increase knowledge and enhance their skills in the use of virtual platforms, to share their experiences, to ask questions, and to intensify leadership training to further empower women.

Dr. Sinyolo concluded that EI will continue to champion gender equality and will continue with the struggle for equality until all women and girls have equitable access to quality education, to leadership positions and to equal opportunities everywhere. He urged participants to apply what they have learnt to organize a meeting, share their stories with the Regional office and also encourage them to join EI Africa webinars. He also said that the Regional office will purchase Zoom licences for each subregional network.
