Mugwena Maluleke Elected President of Education International

In a significant move for the global education union movement, Mugwena Maluleke has been elected as the new President of Education International (EI) at its 10th World Congress in Argentina. EI is the world's largest federation of education unions representing over 33 million teachers and education workers worldwide.

Maluleke, who currently serves as the General Secretary of the South African Democratic Teachers' Union (SADTU), brings a wealth of experience and a lifelong commitment to advocating for teachers' rights and quality public education.

"This is a critical time for education systems globally. Teachers and education support personnel have faced immense challenges in recent years, from the disruptions of the COVID-19 pandemic to the chronic underfunding of public schools," said Maluleke upon his election. "We are committed to amplifying the voices of educators and demanding the investments needed to deliver on the human right to quality public education for all."

Mugwena added, “As human and trade union rights activists, we have an inescapable obligation to fight misguided austerity measures”.

Maluleke's journey as a unionist and educator has spanned several decades. He joined SADTU in 1990 and quickly rose through the ranks, serving as the union's General Secretary since 2009. During his tenure, he has been a vocal advocate for teachers' professional development, improved working conditions, and the need for greater investment in public education. Mugwena has also been EI Vice President for Africa for several years.

In his congratulatory message, EI Africa Director, Dennis Sinyolo, expressed the African region’s delight at the election of Maluleke as EI President. “We congratulate Comrade Mugwena Maluleke on his election as President of Education International and wish him the very best in steering the global education union movement in the next five years”, he said. “Maluleke brings to the top leadership of EI vast education and trade union experience and the African region looks forward to working with him to defend and promote educators and students rights in Africa and globally”, Sinyolo concluded.

In addition to Maluleke's election, the 10th EI World Congress also saw the election of five new Vice Presidents each representing a global region and members of the EI Executive Board. This diverse and experienced team of education union leaders is poised to strengthen the global union movement in meeting present and future challenges.
