World Labour Day: Recognising Africa's Hardworking Teachers

As the world commemorates  Workers' Day 2024, Education International Africa (EI Africa) is renewing calls for governments to prioritise policies that can deliver jobs, stability, and economic participation for all. The theme of this year's commemoration, "A renewed call for jobs, peace and democracy for shared prosperity" highlights the urgent need for inclusive development on the continent.

Despite lack of proper resources and facilities,  low wages and poor working conditions, African teachers and education support personnel dedicate themselves to educating and nurturing future generations. The economic realities on the ground have been exacerbated in the past few years due to issues such as the ongoing effects of COVID-19, the rising cost of living, and the debt crisis gripping many nations.

In light of these obstacles, EI Africa is urging governments and societies to recognise the immense contributions made by African educators every day. "While education lays the groundwork for a brighter future, many of Africa's dedicated teachers continue to face difficulties with lack of resources and low pay. This Workers' Day, I encourage governments and everyone to acknowledge the tremendous efforts of educators across the continent who endeavour to mold young minds despite confronting hardship. Through their commitment and sacrifice, educators hold the key to children's prosperity. Leaders must translate flowery words of gratitude into concrete actions that uplift teachers’ living standards and working environments. Only then can we truly express appreciation for their priceless contributions to society”, stated, Dr. Dennis Sinyolo, Regional Director, EI Africa.

African governments must, as a matter of urgency prioritise investing in education infrastructure, guaranteeing living wages, and strengthening social security nets. This action will go a long way in boosting teacher welfare and morale. Most importantly, teachers will demand actions ensuring civil and political rights that allow participation in democratic processes. "Only by guaranteeing the fundamentals of freedom can we build societies where all people can achieve their potential. This is the shared prosperity we envision for Africa's workers and youth," concluded Dr. Dennis Sinyolo.

Happy Labour Day to all teachers !!
