Young Educators Gather in Johannesburg to Promote Quality Education for All in Africa

The Sandton Convention Centre in Johannesburg became a hub of inspiration and collaboration as young and passionate educators from Eswatini, Mozambique, and South Africa convened on Saturday, November 18, 2023, for the Southern Africa Young Educators Network (SAYEN) seminar. The event, organized by Education International (EI) Africa, aimed to empower young educators, and promote the achievement of quality public education for all in Africa.
Dr. Dennis Sinyolo, Regional Director of Education International Africa, opened the conference with a warm welcome to all attendees. He emphasized the importance of education unions in advocating for students' and teachers' rights and the significance of educators' working conditions in shaping students' learning environments.
During the seminar, the preliminary findings of a study on barriers to young members' participation in education unions and leadership were presented by researcher, Alex Nkosi. This study aims to identify the obstacles faced by young educators and develop strategies to overcome them. Nkosi encouraged attendees to contribute their insights and experiences to enrich the study's findings further.
The seminar’s main goal was to empower young educators from Southern Africa to assess, monitor, and advocate for quality public education in Africa, with a particular focus on Sustainable Development Goal 4 (SDG 4) and the Continental Education Strategy for Africa 2016–2025 (CESA).
The young educators expressed their gratitude to EI Africa and promised to actively participate in union activities in their respective countries.
Dr. Sinyolo urged all attendees to actively participate and share their countries' progress towards SDG 4 and CESA objectives. He emphasized that educators have the power to lead and inspire change in their classrooms, communities, and beyond, but to do so effectively, they need knowledge.
