Ghana: UTAG declares industrial action over stalled negotiations

As announced in a press conference statement released by the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG), on 28th July 2021, the union will go on an indefinite nationwide strike on Monday 2nd, August 2021. The strike is because the Government of Ghana has failed to cooperate with UTAG to finalize the negotiations on its condition of service, which began in August 2018, yet their members continue to work under worsening economic conditions.
 
While addressing the press conference, Professor Charles Marfo,  National President for the Association, stated that the Government has always failed to respect the Rule of Engagement signed between the two parties to guide the negotiations.
 
Professor Marfo lamented the deterioration of salaries and worsening conditions of service for university teachers and researchers in the country, leaving the academic staff wallowing in poverty. 
 
“We urge the Government of Ghana to engage in dialogue with UTAG in order to resolve the current impasse”, said EI Africa Director, Dr Dennis Sinyolo.
