Cote d’Ivoire: Cascade Training in EI EFAIDS Programme

Participants worked in groups to assess and approve the new EFAIDS manual, ‘Leadership in the HIV/AIDS Response’. The results from a survey of child protection laws were presented, from which participants worked to refine a union document on ‘non-violence in schools, and a working group was established to draft a Code of Ethics. A regional training in Korhogo town bringing together 12 participants from the 6 towns of Korhogo region was held in the wake of the national training. Participants discussed a wide range of AIDS-related themes and familiarised themselves with the new teachers’ manual. Authorities in Korhogo expressed their satisfaction that unions are working in this area of Cote d’Ivoire that has been affected by unrest for years, and particularly for their work in promoting peaceful schools. In April, a local training took place in the town of Petit Clerc in the district of Ferkessédougou. Doumbia Mamadou a participant at the Korhogo regional training led the workshop and was assisted by some national trainers. She passed on the training on AIDS related themes and brought the new manual to the local trainers. The film ‘Courage and Hope’ which profiles the experiences of four African teachers living with HIV and AIDS was shown to participants at the national, regional and local workshops. The EI EFAIDS Programme in Cote d’Ivoire is implemented by a coalition of four teacher unions affiliated to EI under the name the IE-SCI (Education International Cote d’Ivoire Section).
