Young Educators Gather in Accra for Leadership Training

In a significant initiative aimed at empowering young educators, the African Young Educators Network (AYEN) Leadership Training Workshop was held in Accra, Ghana, bringing together passionate young educators from across the African region. Dr. Dennis Sinyolo, Regional Director of Education International Africa, opened the workshop by emphasizing the importance of transforming the teaching profession in Africa. He highlighted the role of education unions in advocating for quality public education, underscoring that educators' working conditions directly impact students' learning environments.
 
The workshop aligns with the broader global education framework, including the Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 4, which aims to ensure inclusive and equitable quality education for all. Dr. Sinyolo pointed out the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, climate change, and other crises that have exacerbated educational exclusion in Africa, leaving millions of children and youth without access to education. He reiterated Education International's commitment to the Go Public! Fund Education campaign calls for increased investment in education and teacher support across the continent.
 
\Xolani Dube from the South African Democratic Teachers' Union (SADTU) presented vital recommendations to enhance young educators' involvement in union activities adopted at the 10th EI Africa Regional Conference, held in Johannesburg, South Africa, in November last year. The Regional Conference was preceded by a Young Members Forum, “Young Educators Unite for Resilient Educative Systems”. The forum highlighted the pressing challenges young educators face in the workforce and within unions. Key recommendations included the establishment of dedicated budgets for youth activities, the creation of clear policies to integrate young educators, and the need for intergenerational dialogue platforms that amplify their voices and ideas.
 
The recommendations emphasized the importance of strengthening training programs to equip young members with essential skills such as decision-making and effective communication. He also called for the development of targeted leadership courses and mentorship programs to facilitate knowledge transfer from experienced educators. The presentation concluded with a strong message urging member unions to implement the resolutions made at the conference, stressing that these recommendations should not merely be symbolic but should lead to tangible improvements in the representation and empowerment of young educators within the educational landscape.
 
The AYEN Leadership Training Workshop concluded with an inspiring call to action for all young educators to actively engage in union activities. Participants were encouraged to step forward, be recognized, and lead various initiatives within their unions. The emphasis was placed on the vital role young educators play in shaping the future of education and advocating for their rights and the rights of their students.
