Educators Converge in Argentina for 10th EI World Congress

From July 27th to August 2nd, over 1,400 education union leaders from 150 countries convened in Buenos Aires, Argentina for the 10th Education International (EI) World Congress. This global gathering of educators is focused on ensuring that students receive the high-quality education they deserve by advocating for fair pay, better working conditions, and greater respect for education workers worldwide.

The theme of this year's EI Congress is, "Growing our Unions, Elevating our Professions, and Defending Democracy." Union representatives from across the globe will join forces to strengthen their collective voice and bargaining power. They will share best practices for growing union membership and elevating the teaching profession to the respected status it deserves. Amidst rising authoritarianism in many countries, the Congress will also focus on defending democratic values and human rights, that are essential for providing students with a well-rounded education.

"This Congress comes at a critical time, as educators around the world face increasing challenges to their profession and ability to serve students effectively," said EI General Secretary David Edwards. "By uniting in solidarity, we will ensure that the future of education - and our students - is protected and nurtured. Education is a fundamental human right, and we will not back down until it is fully realized for all."

In welcoming the Congress delegates and observers to Buenos Aires, EI President, Susan Hopgood, reiterated the global union federation’s resolve and commitment to defending and promoting quality public education, democracy, human and trade union rights around the world.
