EI Africa Regional Committee meets to address present and future priorities

The Education International Africa Regional Committee (EIARC) recently held a virtual meeting on 3 July to delve into crucial issues concerning education in Africa. The primary objective of the meeting was to evaluate the progress made and outline future strategies for education and the trade union movement across the continent. During the online meeting, significant attention was given to topics such as the upcoming 10th EI World Congress, taking place in Buenos Aires, Argentina; decisions made by the Education International (EI) Executive Board; the appointment of the Standing Committee members, and any urgent matters requiring immediate attention.

In her welcome remarks, Mariama Chipkaou, the Chairperson of EIARC, expressed optimism that all the registered delegates and observers would be able to obtain their visas and travel to Buenos Aires for the 10th EI World Congress. She also urged the General Secretary of EI to ensure that the funding needed for the continuation and expansion of the Go Public! Fund Education campaign in Africa  is provided.

Mariama Chipkaou then emphasized that ‘’with expertise, passion, and collaborative spirit, I know we are more than up to the task. Let us approach these discussions with open minds, a commitment to solidarity, and a focus on making tangible progress for the educators and learners we serve’’.

During his opening speech, David Edwards, the EI General Secretary, praised the Regional Office for their exceptional work throughout the years and for the successful organisation of the 10th Regional Conference held in Johannesburg. He briefly discussed the Recommendations put forth by the UN High-Level Panel on the Teaching Profession and encouraged participants to obtain a copy at the Congress.

Edwards also quoted UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres’ statement from the release of the Panel’s recommendations, emphasizing the importance of valorizing, recognizing and supporting teachers just as teachers support all of us.

‘The Panel calls on the international community to establish a Global Fund dedicated to teachers’ salaries. This Fund would ensure that teachers working in crisis situations receive fair and timely salaries  for their role in educating and supporting the most vulnerable children under challenging circumstances’’, emphasized Edwards.

The Committee received updates on the EI Africa progress report, Congress matters, and approved the suggested members of the Standing Committee. The meeting also discussed the scheduling of face-to-face EIARC meetings.
