Young Educators for the Africa We Want

Young educators from 10 Southern African countries, namely South Africa, Eswatini, Mozambique, Lesotho, Zambia, Namibia, Zimbabwe, Botswana, Angola, and Malawi participated in a leadership training from 11th to 12th July 2024 at Garden Court Hotel, O.R. Tambo, in Johannesburg, South Africa. The training was organized by Education International Africa (EIA) for members of the Southern Africa Young Educators Network (SAYEN).

The leadership training for SAYEN members was designed to build a critical mass of SDG4 young advocates in Southern Africa   to intensify advocacy for the realization of an inclusive, equitable, and lifelong learning for all by expanding SAYEN for greater involvement of young educators in the trade union movement.

Speaking at the event, the Regional Director of EIA, Dr. Dennis Sinyolo said, ‘Education is a fundamental human right and a public good’. It is therefore important that the Governments stick to the commitments they made to achieve SDG4. He told participants that the training was in line with EI’s Go Public! Fund Education campaign launched on 24 January 2023 to call on governments to invest in education and teachers, as well as in education support personnel, infrastructure, teaching and learning resources. He added that the Africa Young Educators Network (AYEN) was also launched by EI Africa in September 2021 to build the capacity of young teachers and education support personnel to advocate for quality public education for all and participate more actively in union structures and activities.

Participants were taken through participatory presentations, discussions and exercises to empower them with leadership skills to take up leadership roles in their Unions, schools and communities. Young educators from participating Southern African countries also shared the progress they have made towards achieving SDG4 and the objectives of the Continental Education Strategy for Africa (CESA) by 2030 in their respective countries and the challenges they are facing.

Dr. Sinyolo encouraged participants to involve themselves in union activities and leadership and to be advocates of the Go Public! Fund Education Campaign.  He asked all members to be ambassadors and advocates of SDG4 and post CESA proposals.

The event is one of the planned activities under the Promoting Education and Educators’ Rights (PEER) Project supported by OAJ and SASK of Finland.
