Niger: EI member organisations call for funding of education and revaluing of the teaching profession

Niger's education sector unions, united under the umbrella of the Niger Section of Education International (IESNI), celebrated the 6th edition of International Education Day through a press conference held on Wednesday 24 January 2024 in Dosso.

They recalled the history and context of the proclamation of the International Education Day by the United Nations General Assembly in 2018 to celebrate the vital role of education in promoting peace and development. As a result, IESNI stressed the importance of building the capacity of teachers, who are the key players in any education system.

The five EI member organisations in Niger that joined the event deplored the recurrent insecurity in the country, which has caused the closure of nearly 1,000 schools in the Tillabéry Region alone, depriving some 80,000 students of their right to education. They highlighted that several hundred other young Nigeriens also find themselves outside the education system for many other reasons, including security, socio-economic, and cultural obstacles.

They reiterated the importance of inclusive, quality public education and the need for the transition government of Niger to make the necessary efforts to achieve SDG4. They supported the EI "Go public! Fund Education” campaign and stressed the urgent need for better funding of public education in Niger. According to IESNI, inclusive quality education requires the upgrading of the teaching profession, as well as taking other measures to make the education system more resilient in a context greatly affected by the effects of climate change, armed conflict, migration and poverty, among other factors.
