African Young Educators Network (AYEN) Forum Empowers Young Educators to Drive Resilient Education Systems

The African Young Educators Network (AYEN) forum, held under the theme "Young Educators United For Resilient Education Systems," took place on November 19, 2023, at Sandton Convention Centre, in Johannesburg, South Africa. Organized by Education International Africa, the event aimed to empower young educators across Africa and equip them with the necessary skills and knowledge to effect positive change and participation within their respective unions.

In his opening remarks, Dr. Dennis Sinyolo, the Regional Director of EI Africa, emphasized on the transformative qualities of young educators, including their dynamism, passion, and technical expertise. He urged them to view themselves as change agents and leaders who can drive the next phase of teacher unionism in Africa. Dr. Sinyolo encouraged young educators to utilize advocacy, lobbying, and campaigns to engage all stakeholders in the education space and draw attention to critical issues.

To ensure progress towards Sustainable Development Goal 4 (SDG 4) and the Continental Education Strategy for Africa (CESA) objectives, Dr. Sinyolo outlined several key actions for AYEN members. These actions included conducting research and assessments on SDG 4/CESA objectives, monitoring progress, engaging in advocacy with governments, participating in EI's Go Public Fund Education campaign, building alliances with sister trade unions and like-minded organizations, and sharing success stories through various media platforms.

Addressing the crucial issue of education financing, Dr. Sinyolo presented recommendations to improve funding for education. He stressed the importance of increasing the share of the education budget, striving to meet internationally agreed financing benchmarks of at least 6% of GDP or 20% of the national budget. Additionally, he highlighted the need to ensure the fairness and progressiveness of taxation, combat corruption, and close tax loopholes. Dr. Sinyolo emphasized the significance of addressing educational inequalities and ensuring the effective allocation of budgetary resources to reach their intended beneficiaries.

During the forum, Alex Nkosi, the lead researcher on barriers to young members' participation in education unions and leadership, shared preliminary findings from an ongoing study. The research aims to identify obstacles faced by young educators and develop strategies to overcome them. Nkosi encouraged active participation from the young educators, urging them to contribute their insights and experiences to enrich the study's findings.

The AYEN forum provided a platform for young educators across Africa to gather, exchange ideas, and strengthen their capacity to drive resilient education systems. With the guidance and support of Education International Africa, these passionate and skilled individuals are poised to effect positive change in their unions, advocate for education policies, and contribute to the achievement of SDG 4 and national education goals.

The African Young Educators Network (AYEN) forum emphasized key strategies to empower and integrate young educators into education unions across Africa. These strategies include establishing dedicated budgets for youth activities, developing policies that integrate young educators, fostering intergenerational dialogue through dedicated platforms, strengthening training programs to equip young members with essential skills and union culture, providing targeted leadership courses and awareness campaigns, implementing mentoring programs for knowledge transfer, ensuring youth representation in decision-making processes and executive positions, encouraging the creation of regional young educator networks, promoting diversity and equal opportunities, and conducting communication and advocacy campaigns to boost the confidence of young educators. These initiatives aim to create a supportive and inclusive environment for young educators, enabling them to contribute effectively to shaping the future of education.
