EI Africa commemorates World Teachers Day

On this World Teachers Day (WTD), under the theme ‘The teachers we need for the education we want: The global imperative to reserve the teacher shortage’, we celebrate the vital role that teachers play in shaping the world we desire. This theme, designed by UNESCO, ILO, and Education International (EI), highlights the fundamental importance of teachers in education and emphasizes the need for them to be well-trained, well-supported, and well-remunerated.

Teachers are the backbone of education. However, in many countries, we are witnessing a concerning trend of teachers leaving the profession they are passionate about, while fewer young people aspire to become educators. According to a UNESCO Institute of Statistics (UIS) report, 69 million additional teachers will be needed to achieve universal primary and secondary education to fulfill SDG4 by 2030. The report also showed regional differences, stating regions such as sub-Saharan Africa and Southern Asia would require the most teachers to fulfill the educational needs of their growing population. Taking urgent action is of utmost importance.

On this World Teachers' Day, EI Africa is calling all to unite in a global movement, urging governments around the world to prioritize investment in teachers and quality public education. Together, we can make a difference and amplify our voices for positive change. On this note, join EI in a webinar on 5th October 2023 to commemorate World Teachers Day. Click here to register.
