International Women’s Day 2022
The International Women’s Day is a global Day celebrated annually to commemorate the cultural, political and socio-economic achievements of women. The International Women's Day (IWD) dates back some 111 years. It started as a trade union movement and has become an annual event recognised by the United Nations. The event began in 1908 when 15,000 women marched through New York City to demand shorter working hours, better wages and the right to vote. It was the Socialist Party of America that declared the first National Women's Day a year later.
Observed by the United Nations (UN) since 1975, the purpose of International Women's Day, celebrated on 8th March, is to bring attention to the social, political, economic, and cultural issues that women face, and to advocate for the advance of women within all those areas. In 1996, the UN began to adopt an annual theme for each year. The first theme was "Celebrating the Past, Planning the Future". The theme of the International day 2022 is” Gender Equality today for a sustainable tomorrow “. This theme was chosen as a recognition of the contribution of women and girls who have taken the lead to address climate change issues in order to build a sustainable future.
Education International, recognizing the important role played by women teachers in promoting climate change education, will publish blogs on the contribution of women teachers across EI regions on climate change and gender equality.
Given that the 8th of March 2022 is being celebrated in a context of the COVID-19 pandemic, of which one major consequence has been the rise in incidences of gender-based violence, EI Africa region calls on all women in the education sector in Africa, like millions of women across the world, to also take to the streets to demand the right to be safe, respected, and equal. EIRAF also urges the members unions to use the 8th of March as a moment to reflect on issues of gender equality.
Happy International Women’s Day 2022!
