Education Unions take action to eradicate SRGBV

With the assistance of Gender@Work resource persons, Education International (EI) Africa Women's Networks in anglophone and francophone West and Central Africa (WAWEN, RESAO, and RESAC) organized an online workshop on School Related Gender Based Violence (SRGBV). The webinar was held on 28th February 2022 via the Zoom platform. Its primary goal was to increase awareness and mobilise union members to join the fight against SRGBV. The webinar was attended by ninety-nine union leaders and members/educators from WAWEN anglophone, RESAC (Central Africa) and the West Africa francophone subgroup.

The theme of the webinar was “Education unions in West and Central Africa take action to end SRGBV in the time of Covid-19”. In his introductory remarks, Dr Dennis Sinyolo, Regional Director of EI Africa, emphasised on the importance of doing much more to ensure that all our schools and education institutions are safe, healthy and welcoming to all. He went on to say that through the EI Declaration on Professional Ethics, educators of the world have committed to respect and protect the rights of their students, as well as to protect children from sexual abuse.

“We need to join forces, to speak up and tackle SRGBV head on. EI is committed to this cause and will continue to empower girls and women to learn and teach in safety”, he concluded.

During the webinar, participants gained a deeper understanding of SRGBV, as well as the causes, and effects of SRGBV on students, schools and communities. The union leaders shared experiences on strategies their unions use to address SRGBV. They used the opportunity to identify immediate actions that the unions will take to combat gender-based violence.
