Burundi: STEB takes action to eradicate child labour

In Burundi, the education union STEB organised on 29 July a training session for 30 teachers on the subject of child labour in Mutimbuzi (Rukaramu zone, Bujumbura province). Fishing, brick making and rice cultivation are among the main forms of child labour in this area. The training is part of the project STEB is developing in Mutimbuzi to abolish child labour.

Rémy Nsengiyumva, President of STEB, stated: "We had already trained 22 trainers on 16 July. These trainers and the 30 teachers will sensitise the whole community and decision-makers to bring back as many child labourers as possible to school in the next school year. This type of project is an integral part of our trade union work: we fight for the improvement of teachers' living and working conditions but also for the respect of all fundamental rights, including children's rights. We believe that education is the best way to fight child labour”.

The STEB trainings have been relayed by three major radio stations in Burundi. They are part of a project supported by Education International and the GEW Fair Childhood Foundation.
